The best laid plans…
In my catechism years, we spent two hours each Saturday, except in the summer, for two years of instruction on Luthers’ Catechism and the teachings and beliefs of our Lutheran faith. After our catechism, we had junior and senior Luther League meetings. Pastor Schellhase believed in asking questions of the students on Confirmation Sunday of what they had learned and we had several practice sessions for this. Just before Confirmation Sunday, I realized that if we all stood in the same position for the rotation of the questions we would get the same question as we did in practice. All twelve kids in our class thought this was a great idea. Well, we were all on stage in Fellowship Hall for the Confirmation and the questions, when it was discovered that one our classmates was sick and not present. This threw the questions all out of order and resulted in chaos! Poor Pastor Schellhase was sadly surprised and I do not believe he ever knew what happened. So much for the wisdom and short cuts of youth!
